The impact of a home

A home is about far more than bricks and mortar. Having a safe and suitable place to live provides the foundation for people to build their lives – supporting health, wellbeing and stability.

Research into the social value of housing shows that the right home in the right place can have a significant positive impact on people and communities. Providing access to stable housing can lead to improved health, employment opportunities and reduced pressure on public services.

This research highlights the important role housing plays in supporting individuals, families and communities.

Housing access

Helping local people stay in their communities

Access to housing has become increasingly difficult in recent years. Across the UK, around 29% of people aged between 20 and 34 now live with their parents, largely due to housing affordability challenges. Rising housing costs mean many young people struggle to find a home close to family, work or support networks.

Providing a mix of homes, including affordable housing and shared ownership options, can help younger residents take their first step into independent living while remaining part of their local community. This helps ensure towns and villages remain places where people of all generations can live.

Changing needs

Homes for every stage of life

People’s housing needs change throughout their lives. For many, this means moving to a smaller, more manageable home later in life, ideally while staying in the communities they know.

In many cases, providing suitable homes for downsizing can also help free up larger homes for families who need more space, allowing housing to better meet the needs of local residents.
